  Brookfield Road: Two things worthy of mention in this picture. One the lack of chimneys that make the houses look like barns, and although you can’t see them, the lack of cellar grates that presumably mean the coal cellars have been filled in?

  The last terrace in Brookfield Road showing number 40 on the left of the picture. To the left of number 40 is a new (ish) development of houses built on the site of the Heinz warehouse – at least that’s what it was in the ‘50’s and early 1960’s. The waste land in front of the houses used to be a boat yard according to my Dad, who was apprenticed there for a few weeks in the early 1920’s until he had to ‘go for the biggest penny’ which meant getting a job in the Jewellery Quarter. I do remember him telling me how they used to steam two 35 foot lengths of timber to make the keels for the narrow boats, so the yard was obviously a going concern at one time. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

  The canal arm end of Brookfield Road: Now here’s an area that has changed pretty well beyond recognition. This is the canal arm at the end of Brookfield Road, with what used to be All Saints Hospital on the left (anyone remember the line of poplar trees that used to be here at the end of Brookfield Road? On the right along the modern footpath is Hockley Port.

  Brookfield Road: This is the right hand side of Brookfield Road at the end where Heinz warehouse (later an engineering works) used to be.

  Western Road: Strangely, although it must have featured in many people’s lives with so many factories and workshops, I can't find any reference to Western Road on the Brookfields website. Well here it is! This shot is of Western Road looking towards Dudley Road taken near the canal bridge.

  Where Western Road ends and Crabtree Road begins: For those who may have wondered where Western Road ends and Crabtree Road begins (I know I should get out more!) here’s the proof. The sign is on Western Road bridge but it says Crabtree Road, so now you know!

  Highfield Terrace: On the right as you go along Brookfield Road, 2 Highfield Terrace was where I was born. Notice how the gardens of two of the front houses have been taken (along with number 15 which was demolished) to make a car park.

  This picture gives no clue as to where we are. The only slight hint is the two bits of steeple sticking up above the trees just right of center. They are part of the St Peter’s steeple in George Street West. The photo is taken pretty well where the Laurel Pub used to stand, so we are in what used to be Hingestion Street.

  Can you guess where it is ? The trick here is to remember that Icknield Street is nowadays a dual carriageway as part of the Inner Ring Road. It runs diagonally left to right across the picture. The old Bunty Clock (where the drivers of the Number 8 bus used to clock in, was just to the right of the sign pointing to’The Jewellery Quarter, where the ‘old’ Icknield Street still is.) Hingestion Street is on the left. The road going off to the right leads almost immediately into Warstone Lane if you turn left, and Carver Street if you don't! Does anyone remember R.Stoddard and Son, the pork butcher that for years, stood at the junction of Carver Street and Icknield Square? Oh, their pork scratching's!!   ICKNIELD STREET: A useful archive shot this one, as it shows the Birmingham Mint in a stage of transition during refurbishment works in October 2008. Incidentally, the gorgeous blue sky isn't enhanced. It really was a beautiful day when I took this and the other photos in this series.

  KEY HILL:  The Gem Buildings Key Hill with Great Hampton Row beyond and Key Hill Cemetery opposite. From memory this building was in existence in the ‘50’s so represents a good marker to recall where now demolished buildings used to be.

Notice the old red sandstone pillars are still there, and the cemetery itself is much better looked after than it used to be with an active ’friends’group, who lobby for action and raise funds to preserve this lovely old burial ground. Incidentally, does anyone else NOT find cemeteries spooky? I find them quite resting, though I probably wouldn't go as far as eating my lunchtime sandwiches in one of them!!

If they are original, I wonder why they weren't removed and melted own for the War Effort like so many other municipal metal ware?

  KEY HILL:  The cemetery is on the right with the Gem Building in the distance on the left. Notice the new buildings dating from the 1990’s. Janet Smith who attended All Saints with me, used to live in a terrace on the left as you went ‘up’ Key Hill, standing where the new buildings are now sited.
